Perfect Start

They call him Copper Jesus, a

tangled statue perched

at the edge of campus.

I start my days with him,

winding up the wooded path

between office and class,

laptop clutched to my chest,

birds calling through the trees,

water dripping off the bronze.

My girls try to beat me,

sit expectantly at their tables

and sing out “Good Morning” as I enter.
